Nigeria is going through a very serious economic surgery- APC governors

Image
Governors of the All Progressive Congress after arising from a meeting with President Buhari at the State House today, has described Nigeria as a sick patient going through a serious economic surgery. A statement by the governors read  “There is no surgery that is not painful.  Nigeria is going through a very serious economic surgery and that is the pains we are experiencing. We share the pains of Nigerians, every human being must feel it. We also feel what they are going through but we are asking for a little patience. Let us do things the right way and do it once and for all.  “I am sure that by next year, you will begin to see changes, the price of rice will drop, prices of dollars will begin to stabilize and we will see a lot of challenges.  But at this painful moment, nobody likes it. “It is like a woman in the labour room, when she is in the labour room there is no joy but she has to pass through that moment and that moment she doesn’t wear her high heel shoes, n

Abuja pastor warns congregation, "Don't bring stolen money to my church"

Image
While preaching in service yesterday, Senior Pastor of the Family Worship Centre, Wuse, Abuja, yesterday warned members of her congregation against bringing stolen money to her church as offerings. Olola Seun Akioye on Facebook shared transcripts of what the pastor said during her sermon. “Any money that you cannot explain to God, don’t bring it to this church. If you are in the civil service and you have stolen money, please don’t bring the tithe to this church; I say this in Jesus name. You cannot do all that and then think you come to church and say a short prayer, that God will forgive you because of Grace. If you have stolen money, don’t bring it to this church; I repeat it in Jesus name. Someone says pastor, we will miss money. Yes, I will rather miss your money and have you make heaven. Christians should be a standing rebuke to the world.  “In church today, you see Christian ladies dress and there is no difference between them and prostitutes. What harlots wear t

Oladele, residing at Fagba area of Lagos, is being tried for breach of peace and assault. The Prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Oct. 12 at Iju in Agege, near Lagos. He alleged that the accused and one other person now at large, unlawfully assaulted two policewomen Insp. Nwosu told court that the accused allegedly obstructed the complainants from arresting one Mrs Kemi Saka now at large. “The complainants were controlling traffic when they arrested Saka for blocking the road with her car and prevented other road users to have right of way.  “They ordered Saka to follow them to the station but the accused who was only a passerby, stopped and inter

Benin-Lagos highway shutdown as market women protest

Protesters on Monday blocked the Uselu/Ugbowo section of the Benin-Lagos highway over plans by Egor Local Government Area of Edo to relocate traders. The protesters, under the aegis of Uselu Market Women Association, were resisting the directive to move to lock-up stores built by the council.  The women, displaying placards, blocked both sides of the highway, preventing motorists from continuing with their trips. Some of the women said the N1.2 million charged for the stalls was too expensive for them, especially given the type of businesses most of them do. The women said their problem was compounded by the action of the local council, which commenced the removal of their make shift shops on Monday.  Mrs Celena Okon, one of the market women, described the council’s action ”as an act of wickedness”, in view of the current economic situation in the country. “What am I selling that you will force me to pay over a million naira for a single store? I believe they should consider the wo

Recession: Beyond the tragedy and pain

In the 1960s, thinkers coined the word “Knowledge Economy” to announce a radical shift from traditional economies. It was an extraordinary gift by intellectuals of that era to a world that some people thought had become sluggish, uncreative and desperately in need of ideas. Today, more than 50 years after that intellectual uprising, many countries still drive their economic policies with huge emphasis on the power of knowledge and human imagination.    For these countries, there is a strong belief that any system of production and consumption that is not based on intellectual capital will fail.  I decided to present this background because Nigeria at present reminds one of the pre 1960s knowledge revolution and the deficit of awareness. Nothing captures our nation’s knowledge paucity of ideas today like the controversial debate on the sale of our nation’s physical assets. But the question is: what exactly are we really selling?  Where is the place of fixed and physical assets in to

Real Madrid now top of La Liga

Image
Real Madrid are now back atop La La after beating Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.  Madrid, unbeaten this season, and with three wins in a row took seven minutes to go ahead. Isco, alert as always, took advantage of Saborit’s lack of speed to get onto the ball in the box and provide an assist for Benzema.  The Frenchman was on hand to put the ball into the back of the net. The Whites seemed to be more and more comfortable on the pitch and looked to increase the deficit. Marcelo crossed in the 16th and Bale’s header just went over. A minute later Athletic did just the same as Sabin Merino’s powerful header was also wide of the mark.  This was a warning sign as just ten minutes later the Basque side had levelled. Eraso pounced on the rebound to assist none other than Sabin Merino, who did not miss this time in the one-on-one with Keylor Navas.  It was Real Madrid who had the best chances before the break. Carvajal came close in the 41st minute but is was stopped by Iraizoz.  Cristi

No basis for condemning judges’ arrest – Ex-NBA Chairman

Image
Mr Jonathan Taidi, a former Chairman of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Minna Branch, on Monday said there was no basis for condemning the Department of State Security Service (DSS) over recent arrest of judges. Taidi told newsmen in Minna that the DSS acted within the realm of the law.  He challenged those criticizing the action, to show any court order which declared the DSS action illegal. He explained that from information available in public domain, the DSS obtained valid search warrants before conducting the search on the judges’ premises.  “Why are we condemning the DSS when they are in possession of valid search warrants,” he queried. The former NBA chairman stressed that the affected judges have a moral burden to establish their innocence before members of the general public.  Taidi insisted that the judges must strive to defend their reputation and integrity, so as to insulate the judicial institution from ridicule. He advocated for the strengthening of disciplinary me

Taylor Swift Is Officially Out of the Woods: Inside Her Unforgettable--and Only--Show of 2016

Image
In case you were worried that  Taylor Swift  might not bounce back so easily from any personal drama that had occurred over the summer... Ha, you're good to quit thinking such nonsense right now. The 26-year-old artist, suffering from a cold but otherwise not showing one iota of rust after a nearly 11-month break from performing live, tore up the stage at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, positively thrilling the announced crowd of at least 80,000 fans lucky enough to be witnessing in person  Swift's first and only concert of 2016 . "I'm Taylor—and welcome to F1 on a Saturday night!" she strutted down stage in a bedazzled black romper, her legs looking a mile long (a bit like the line of people that snaked around the venue who were hoping for a glimpse of the headliner while the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix qualifying was still underway). After blazing through "New Romantics," "22" and "Blank Space," Swift t
